RELG 301

Mid Term Projects/Papers
There are no Exams this Semester, but there will be a Mid-Term Project/Paper and a Final Paper or Project
Mid Term Projects/Paper
Choose one of the following three Projects/Papers.
The Projects should be 2,000-4,000 words.
Go here for the grading rubric.
The Project/Paper will be due 9am, WEDNESDAY, March 5, 2025
Mid-Term Project 1
You are the Assistant Pastor at a small country Church. The Senior Pastor asks you to plan several Worship Services for various groups in the Church or the local community. Each Service should contain several Scripture readings and a Psalm to be read by the congregation, a short sermon or message based on the Psalm, and three to five hymns or worship songs.
Sketch out the Worship Services (for all four)
- The children's group, ages 3 to 10
- The college-age study group
- The senior adult fellowship
- The Sunday afternoon service in the local Retirement Home
Remember that different age-groups will appreciate different music, and have different needs and abilities.
Children have a short attention span, and they have difficulty sitting still and listening for long periods. You will need to think of a short activity or some action songs to include for them. For the children, it is OK to include songs such as "Father Abraham", rather than regular worship hymns.
Your plans should include :
- Your choice of Psalm
- The main point of the message you aim to deliver
- Other scriptures that might be read, or printed in a hand-out
- Opening hymn, Closing hymn, one to three hymns during the service/meeting
- How you would tie the Service together (the main theme or message of the Service
Please indicate where the lyrics and tunes for the hymns may be found (on the Internet if possible).
Remember the length requirement of 2,000 words. You will have to develop the theme of your message, and explain the rationale for your choices of hymns and scriptures
Mid-Term Project 2
Write a "Wisdom Psalm" in the form of an alphabetic acrostic, with two lines for each letter of the alphabet.
You are excused from lines for X and Z, but may write them for extra credit.
You may use either a rhyming form using one of the meters used in English poetry, or an alliterative form similar to that of Hebrew poetry.
You should use the themes and style of Biblical Psalms.
Examples :
A wise man studies to do right,
A fool will sleep both day and night.
or
Agnostics suffer agonies of apprehension,
And angry ants await the arrogant.
I know you can do better than that
Mid-Term Project 3
Write three verses of a hymn based on any passage of poetical literature which we have covered so far.
Try to keep as closely to the original Scripture as possible.
You may use a familiar hymn tune, or if you wish for extra credit, you may write a tune to go with it.
Your final work should include the Scripture reference, your verses, and the name and meter of the tune. Original tunes can be indicated by giving the names of the notes (eg. C Bb D# ) or if you have MIDI or video capabilities you may send me a MIDI file or a video as a link to your submission to Canvas, or as an attachment to an email message to me at my enmu.edu email address.
