A : Eight Reflection Papers :

Each Reflection Paper should be one to two pages in length - for some of these you may have to consult sources other than the textbook

1. The roles of the Emperor (or ruling Empress) and the hierarchy of the Byzantine Church - include examples of actual emperors, empresses, and other leaders of the Church
2. The Cathedral of Hagia Sophia
3. The spirituality of the Byzantine Church - to include monasticism, prayer, and icons
4. Monotheletism and its consequences for East-West relations in the Church
5. The Iconoclastic Controversy
6. Cyril and Methodius - you should go beyond the textbook for your material
7. The coming of Christianity to Bulgaria
8. The Turkish invasions, the Fall of the Byzantine Empire, and the consequences for the Eastern Church

B : The "Jesus Prayer" :

• Use the InterNet Resources to read about the "Jesus Prayer"
• For one day of this week, try to use it as part of your spiritual excercise throughout the day.
• Write a short (half-page) report on the Prayer and its use.
