Grading of Reading Reports and Essays


 

These notes are mainly for the Web-based Courses.
"Key Verses" apply only to REL 101 and REL 103

Reading Reports :

To be eligible for an "A" a Reading Report

  1. must be sent in on time (by 9 am Monday morning)
  2. must have correct answers to all questions
  3. must have adequate answers to questions which ask for an "account"
  4. must give proper acknowledgment to any quoted material
  5. (only applies to REL 101 and REL 103) must have 6 "Key Verses" written out in full

The Grade may drop to a "B" if the Report

  • is up to one week late, OR
  • has up to 3 incorrect, inadequate, or missing answers, OR
  • does not cite sources correctly
  • (only applies to REL 101 and REL 103) does not contain 6 "Key Verses"

The Grade may drop to a "C" if the Report

  • is up to two weeks late, OR
  • has up to 6 incorrect, inadequate, or missing answers, OR
  • has some combination of 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 above

The Grade may drop to a "D" if the Report

  • has up to 10 incorrect, inadequate, or missing answers, OR
  • has some combination of 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 above

Essays :

This section applies only to courses which have essays.

To be eligible for an "A" an Essay

  1. must be sent in on time (by 9 am Monday morning)
  2. must be 3 or more pages long
  3. must keep to the topic of the Essay
  4. must use Edited Standard Written English (ESWE)
  5. must give proper acknowledgment to any quoted material

The Grade may drop to a "B" if the Essay

  • is up to one week late, OR
  • is less than three pages long, OR
  • has up to 5 mistakes in ESWE per page (this includes spelling mistakes and typos), OR
  • cites sources incorrectly

The Grade may drop to a "C" if the Essay

  • is up to two weeks late, OR
  • has up to 10 mistakes in ESWE per page, OR
  • wanders off the topic of the Essay, OR
  • omits main events from an account or essay on someone's life, OR
  • uses large amounts of copied material (even if it is cited correctly), OR
  • has some combination of 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 above

The Grade may drop to a "D" if the Essay

  • is padded with inappropriate or improperly acknowledged quotations, OR
  • merely lists events, rather than giving a well-written account, OR
  • reads like an article which has been cut and pasted from other sources, OR
  • does not give proper acknowledgment for quoted material, OR
  • does not address the topic adequately, OR
  • has some combination of 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 above

Reading Reports or Essays which show evidence of a breach of Academic Integrity (copying from another student or from sources without due acknowledgement, or allowing another student to copy one's work) will be given a Grade of "F".
Further penalties may also apply.

Essays should be prepared with a word processor and proof-read for typos, spelling, and grammar before they are submitted. The standards of Edited Standard Written English, ESWE will be applied to the Essays. Essays which contain many mistakes in grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation may be downgraded.
